Each character includes a stat for HP (your life points), while your SP (your spell power) determines how much magic and skills are used over a battle's duration. While in combat, characters can use skills based on their equipped weapon and the magic tied to their class, along with regular attacks. You can tap on the arrows to move in the desired direction or swipe. Your character automatically stops once a corner in your path is reached. Moving your character is limited to a 'point and click' style on a touch screen, though you can move faster by swiping your finger.

Upon completing another character's introductory chapter, you will be able to follow whichever of the 8 stories you'd like to in the journal, following each person's journey across Osterra.
After completing the first chapter of your starting character, you can then begin to explore the world and meet up with the other characters (which can be located on the map at many of the main cities and towns, and help them begin the first chapter of their own story.
